This just in, from Google:
“Starting April 21, we will be expanding our use of mobile-friendliness as a ranking signal. This change will affect mobile searches in all languages worldwide and will have a significant impact in our search results…”
If your site is not mobile friendly, we need to do something about that. See the definition of significant to understand the urgency..
Significant : very important
See? Ok, now lets be proactive! Check to see if Google views your site as mobile friendly by taking their Mobile Friendly Test.
All of the Pretty Darn Cute Design Genesis Themes just so happen to be completely mobile friendly. If you’re not sure what “mobile friendly” means it’s often referred to as “responsive design” or “mobile responsive design” but will soon become known as just “design” as it is so important a website have the ability to adapt to all screen sizes.
When you search on a mobile device you’ll see under the site name whether or not the is mobile friendly.
A little sidenote about our Adorable WordPress theme, I will be taking it off the market in the coming days. If you want to grab it, now is the time. Adorable is mobile responsive, but is no longer up to the standard we wish our customers websites to be held. It’s a fantastically whimsical theme, with great features, but the code is semi-outdated. That said, if you’re using it now there’s no need to worry about a thing. The theme still functions like a champ, and we will always offer support for Adorable (and MomPreneur which we recently stopped selling for the same reason). The rest of the PDCD Themes collection is all very much up to date, and has the latest and greatest in web standards. Hooray!
My promise to you is to always keep our feminine wordpress themes up to date in every way, and on top of coming trends in a way that your design still remain timeless. It may sound like a sales pitch when I say to think of me as your friend in the web design business, but that is truly how I think of all of you. I want to make sure that everyone “wearing” a PDCD theme stands out above the rest.
Is My Site Mobile Friendly?
You can find the entire google announcement on their blog, here. If you have any questions at all about your website being mobile friendly I’m happy to answer them in the comments below. Have a fantastic Friday!
Thank you for the article, it was very informative!
I’m glad to hear you found it useful! 🙂
Awesome! I noticed that Google was starting to display (in little green text) beside search results whether or not the link was mobile friendly or not.
I just saw that, it’s in gray text on my phone, and less noticeable, but definitely there nonetheless. Thanks for the heads up 🙂
Well this is very interesting! We run your Pretty Chic theme and when I put in the search for Heart Love Always it comes up with the little gray mobile-friendly. BUT when I put in the URL for the Google test it comes up as not mobile-user with ALL kinds of Googlebot problems. Clearly we have some work to do. I remember running this a few weeks ago with no problems, but now it seems there are problems and I’m not sure what happened. We haven’t changed anything except add posts. Hmmmmmm….
I’m also seeing the demo for pretty chic pass with flying colors, but your site has several errors. You’ll want to start with disabling plugins to see if that rectifies the problem, and go from there removing any customizations you’ve made (check ad codes first, they are usually the culprit).
Thanks Lindsey! I think you are correct that it might be the ads from the ad network.
Is there a theme that you are keeping updated that you recommend to change to if you are using the adorable theme that would “transfer” well? I’m thinking maybe pretty chic.
Hi Sheryl! Pretty Chic is a fantastic theme, and would work wonderfully. My new favorite is FUN though, it’s versatile and you can easily change the home page to look however you like. Sidenote: We keep all of our themes updated, and they will all work perfectly fine, it’s more so the look of Adorable and the coding structure. When Genesis 2.0 released, there were some pretty big changes. Adorable is several years old now, and as these are child themes updates are to be kept to a minimum. I think you totally get that, but I just wanted to put that out there for anyone else who may be worried about themes being updated 🙂 Let me know if you have any questions, I am happy to help! xo
Thank you. I’ll take a look at Fun.
One more quick questions, are their easy to choose color options with the fun theme?
Fun has one color option, Sparkle, that is easily modified in the CSS. You can just scroll to the sparkle area and replace the colors there 🙂 https://prettydarncute.com/demos/fun/sparkle/
Thanks for the update. I received a message from google telling me that my site is not mobile friendly even though it is a genesis theme that is supposedly mobile friendly. I suspect it is the fact that I am using tables to create category grids. Question: Do tables make the site not mobile friendly.
I don’t like the category pages created with the shopping cart that I’ve used for years which is why I used tables for category pages and shortcodes for the product pages.
I’m thinking that it I want to continue to be found on Google, I need to change shopping carts. I’ve bought the Fun theme and will be setting it up with woocommerce on a different domain that I own since I don’t want to disturb the current site while setting up a whole new shopping cart. How easy is it to change a site from one domain to another when I have the new shopping cart/website set up?
Hi Joyce, it’s possible. Without a link it’s difficult to say for certain. The mobile friendly test site link above will actually give you the reason your sites not qualifying as mobile friendly, you can troubleshoot from there. The Genesis Framework and all of their themes are mobile friendly, so the error could lie in anything from a plugin to ad codes etc. Anything added to the site, or changed from the theme’s original code needs to be looked at closely. To point your site to a new domain you’ll just want to follow your hosts directions for changing your a record. If you’re wanting to move an entire site to a new domain, I suggest hiring someone or purchasing a plugin like Backup Buddy: https://ithemes.com/purchase/backupbuddy/ 🙂 I hope that helps!
Let me add another question here, please. I received an email from Google saying my site is not mobile responsive but when I checked it via the link you gave above, it says that it is mobile responsive. How can you tell for sure?
When you say you received an email from google, was this a response to an inquiry on your behalf? The link above tests their current standards and returns a result based on how google views your site’s content, so it would be 100% accurate as far as they’ve let us know.
Hi Lindsey,
I am new to using the Modern Pro Blogger theme and I’m searching how to fix the problem I’m having.
On my mobile or when I shrink my screen on my laptop, all my posts get cut in half and moved to the right. You can’t read anything.
Are there any solutions to this? I tried using this tutorial
https://prettydarncute.com/2014/01/a-responsive-tutorial/
But it doesn’t seem to have helped, unless it takes awhile to update.
Thank you for any help!
Hi Mikki! Yes, your site definitely has something going on there. Out of the box, the theme works perfectly on mobile so you’ll want to retrace the steps you’ve taken since installation (Could also have been an existing plugin causing this issue). Go ahead and post your question in our support forum and we can assist you there.
My theme is mobile friendly, but it doesn’t say that when I google search it and my header does not resize as responsive. How would I go about resolving both of these issues? 🙂
Hi Ikelia! Because the demo is showing mobile responsive, I believe this to be subjective to your site’s individual configuration. You’ll want to start with various plugins and ads you have installed, and disable them to see if that rectifies the issue.
Hi. I have purchased your fun theme, however I am experiencing problems with the mobile/tablet responsiveness. Every time I move the page the menu pops up and dominates most of the page. I would much appreciate some help. Many thanks in advance. Dena http://www.sallyscatrescue.org.uk (still being set up at present)
Hi Dena! Your site is looking great to me, I don’t see that occurring, but go ahead and visit our support forum if you have any questions at all. Thank you for your purchase!
Hi Lindsey,
I have Modern Blogger as a theme on one of the sites that I built. It’s not mobile responsive (which I knew when I purchased it back when you were offering it but my client wanted it anyway!!). My client LOVES her site and doesn’t want to change it but given the new rules with Google it’s really important that we now make it mobile friendly.
Do you have any suggestions about how I can make it mobile responsive, perhaps with Jetpack or a third party plugin? Wasn’t sure if you had any experience with them as I have not.
Thank you!!
Donna
Help! I am working through your Pretty Creative theme and my site is not showing up on mobile. Did I delete something accidentally? the error message reads:
Fatal error: Call to undefined function genesis_get_option() in /home3/tromani/public_html/tamiromani.com/wp-content/plugins/genesis-featured-content-widget/gs-featured-content-widget.php on line 86
I just reinstalled your template to see if it helps and will start over. Let me know if this can be fixed?
I am not a coder, so I need simple info to copy. THANK YOU!!
