In the coming weeks I’ll be sharing your stories in our brand new “Customer Spotlight” series. Over the years I’ve had the honor of designing WordPress themes for you, and have witnessed so much talent in the process. You guys truly amaze me, and I’m excited to showcase your journeys. I feel blessed to have a job I love to do every single day that helps others do theirs. How it came about so organically, and in such a time of need, is testament to our Lord taking even the most seemingly desperate of times and transforming them into a positive.
How I Found My Passion
In April of 2005 I was 21 years old and newly married to my 19 year old husband, Matt. We had met only the year before, but fell hard and fast. Neither one of us owned a computer and he was preparing to leave for a 12 month tour in Iraq. We knew communication would be a challenge but just as we had proven before – When there is a will, there is a way. I would move back home with my parents and use their computer and we would purchase a computer for him to take to Iraq. My parent’s computer was a hulking HP desktop, that while slow and steady, got the job done. He was gone only a short time when a brand new computer was delivered to their doorstep addressed to me. Matt had ordered it prior to his departure. While we were making what I thought were solid plans for communication, he was thinking two steps ahead. Again, another subtle reminder that everything was happening just the way it was supposed to. I was instantly enthralled with this beautiful machine. Computers had always piqued my interest and I learned rather quickly that I had found my niche. I wish I could say it was a simple process, and if we are talking about learning the ins and outs of technology then it did come naturally, but waiting in that chair for the next message from my husband is where the true challenge presented itself. So while I waited I was on a mission to learn.
My computer came with a graphics program installed that upon first glance looked daunting. In the beginning, whenever I would experience these snippets of self-doubt I was quick to remind myself that I had eleven months to finely tune my newfound craft. These brief moments of question are exactly what fueled my eagerness to learn more. It wasn’t long before I was creating my own graphics as my skills progressed quickly.
I discovered early on that it was a challenge logistically to phone everyone to let them know Matt was safe; all the while personally coming to terms with my own indescribable fears as I repeated the same story over again. I guess you could say this lead to the birth of my first blog. The blog allowed me to pass along information to our family quickly and accurately. It was an ugly blog at first. As a creative person this did not sit well with me, but armed with my new graphics skills I was about to change this not-so-pretty platform of communication.
