Note: This post is a departure from my normal subject matter, but one more important than any. In order to take care of your business, you have to take care of yourself. I hope you read this all the way through and join me in the online challenge.
Let’s Get Healthy Together!
Can you believe it’s already nearly summer? I’m in front of my computer a lot, mostly sitting. My activity level, and overall health, has suffered as a result of this. The truth is I have my best ideas, and work most efficiently when I’m taking care of myself. Have you hit a creative lull? Exercise! Feeling irritable? A few small changes in your diet could help push you through. But how and where to start? For years I’ve begged my Brother in Law, Levi, to begin an online training program. He’s finally doing it, and I’m thrilled! Read more about Levi’s education and coaching career on his website, Intensity Training Systems here.
I explained to Levi that a lot of us who stay and work at home, or work long hours out of the house struggle with finding both the time and motivation to just start getting healthier. Levi wrote the article below to help encourage us and get motivated to begin taking better care of ourselves.
Transform Your Body With These 4 Steps
We’ve all been there. It’s the end of December and you are going to nail your New Year’s resolutions this year. Last year some major things got in the way but this year is different. This year is going to be the year that you make exercise and clean eating a priority. Unfortunately for most, this year eventually looks a lot like last year and the year before and the year before that. Life got in the way. Time was at a premium. Work was stressful. The kids had lots of activities. Working out and eating clean fell further and further down the list of priorities. Getting to the gym seemed almost impossible most days. Does this sound familiar? It’s not your fault! Most people don’t even know where to start, let alone keep it going when the going gets tough. You have to have a few things in place to be successful in your health and fitness journey. I know this because I’ve been there. I’ve coached thousands of women and men through breaking this cycle and seen them start living their full life. I know every person is unique and comes to this point by many different paths, and I’ve found that four majors areas need to be addressed for everyone to finally stick to a plan and transform their body:
Find Your WHY.
THIS. Above all other things, this will help you get your exercise and clean eating on track. WHY do you want to (your goal here). WHY is losing 20 pounds is important? WHY do you want to fit into that little black dress? You see, all of these things are admirable goals but they don’t run very deep. Instead of thinking about a snazzy end goal I encourage you to begin by really digging deep, down to who you are, and find the root of WHY you want what you want. The answer will be as unique as each of you, and these ‘why’s’ usually have profound and buried roots. They run a lot deeper than the topsoil thoughts of “I want to look good” or “I want to lose 20 pounds.” They sound more like bedrock reflections of “I want to present my best self to my spouse” or “I want to show my kids what happy and healthy looks like so they’ll grow to be happy and healthy.” and maybe even “I’m going to finally break the unhealthy legacy so many generations of my family struggled with.” What is your WHY?
We’ve all heard the ‘you have to make it a priority’ speech. If I had a dime for every time I’ve used this line with one of our clients I’d be a very rich individual. Despite all the speeches clean eating and consistent exercise remains a mystery to most people. Pardon the cliche but prioritizing your health and fitness really comes down to investing in what you want most instead of what you want right now. Repeat that to yourself outloud, let it marinade and picture what this means for you in your life. This may be staying up 30 minutes later to get your workout in. You would be trading sleep, which is likely what you want right now, for working out which will get you what you want most. You’ll have to make decisions like this daily in your fitness journey. Prepare for them.
“Invest in what you want most instead of what you want right now”
Losing body fat and improving your health is going to move you outside your comfort zone. It’s even more uncomfortable if you try to do it by yourself. We all need accountability, some of us need it more than others, and we all benefit from being held to our convictions. It could be as simple as telling your best friend your ‘why’ and what you’re planning to do about it. It might be as complex as hiring a personal trainer or nutrition coach. What excuses have you used in the past to rationalize abandoning your goals? Write them down if you need to and then create safeguards against them succeeding along your journey. You are going to stay on course. When I first meet with our clients I begin by talking about accountability and I ask them to imagine a situation where, every time they wanted to give up, the person they dislike most on this earth would post it on faceook. Make your accountability personal.
Be honest with yourself, how many times have you thought “I’m starting on Monday.”? Now think about the proudest achievements in your life….did you put anything off before charging forward? Did anything stand a chance slowing you down? I am willing to bet you were so passionate you’d express your enthusiasm to a stranger at the grocery store, with a huge smile. You wanted to start immediately. You need to have the same mentality, the same fire, when it comes to your health and fitness. Do it NOW. First, write out the first 3 steps above. Fill in the gaps with your “why’s”, how you plan to prioritize and how you plan to hold yourself accountable…then GO!
Losing body fat, getting leaner, eating cleaner and becoming the most healthy version of you really isn’t complicated. The nuts and bolts of it are quite simple, actually. The complications come when folks don’t know their ‘why’, don’t know how to prioritize, don’t have accountability and keep putting it off. When you put these things in place, you’ll be a force to reckoned with! You’ll be unstoppable.
